Description
The oldest remaining historic covered bridge in Missouri spans the Whitewater River in Burfordville, in southeast Missouri. Its construction was begun just before the Civil War, and completed in 1868. Early records show that a toll house sat at the far end of the bridge, collecting private tolls to use the road between Burfordville and Jackson. This continued until 1906 when local farmers broke down the gates and used the road without paying.
The covered bridge and the Bollinger Mill it sits next to are both on the National Register of Historic Places.
