Description
The Church of St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury is the home of the Winston Churchill Memorial in Fulton, Missouri. This church, designed by Christopher Wren, stood in London since 1677, and was badly damaged during the London Blitz.
In the 1960s, as a way to commemorate Churchill's "Iron Curtain Speech" (which was delivered on Westminster University's campus), the school moved the church stone by stone to the Westminster campus, and rebuilt it to Wren's original specifications. The National Churchill Museum is located beneath the church.
In 1990, a year after the Berlin Wall came down, Churchill's granddaughter, Edwina Sandys, a sculptor, created "Breakthrough" from a portion of the wall which was originally located near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany. She had always wanted to donate a sculpture to the Churchill Memorial, and this was a perfect way to tie the current historical event with her grandfather's famous speech. (Fulton, Missouri)
