Description
Founded 117 years ago by the children of German immigrants, Peace Church is located in tiny Hartsburg, Missouri, not far from the Missouri River, and the Katy Trail. Over the years, the little church has gone through many changes, including it's name. It began as Friedens Evangelische Gemeinde (which loosely translates to Peace Evangelical Parish), and several years later became part of the "Evangelical & Reformed" denomination, as Friedens Evangelical & Reformed Church. In the late 1950s, the E&R denomination went through another merger, and so our little church adopted the name we know it as today: Peace United Church of Christ.
The original church is the portion in the forefront of the photo -- the part with the steeple. Sometime in the middle of the 20th century (I'm not sure of the exact year), the two-story back portion (that you see on the left) was added on, and called the "Education Annex," housing the Sunday School classrooms. Twenty-two years ago (1989) the wing on the right side the photo was added, more than doubling the size of the sanctuary.
