Where "The Lake" begins! Bagnell Dam was built between 1929 and 1931 by the Union Electric Company (now Ameren) and provides hydroelectric power. The dam is 2543 feet long, with a 520 foot spillway. At the time it was built, the Lake was one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, and was the largest in the U.S. It has 1150 miles of shoreline, and stretches 92 miles end to end.
